"We're going to talk with my squad about what's next, but this evening was only not my nighttime. All respect to Benavidez. He's a hell of a fighter."
In the co-feature, junior middleweight southpaw Jorge Cota may accept complained a little well-nigh fighting someone "who only had five fights," but the 34-year-quondam veteran was forced to rethink that later on coming together Cuban southpaw Yoelvis Gomez.
Cuban southpaw Yoelvis Gomez shutout veteran Jorge Cota in a clash of junior middleweight southpaws.
The 24-twelvemonth-former Gomez won by unanimous scores of 100-xc across the board in going the altitude for the showtime fourth dimension in his career.
This was supposed to be a footstep up for Gomez (six-0, 5 KOs). He threw almost 100 more jabs than Cota (30-6, 27 KOs) and over the last four rounds of the fight, Gomez landed nearly five jabs per round.
"I wanted to steal the prove tonight, and all Mexicans are warriors, and (Cota) was a warrior and he took me the 10 rounds," Gomez said. "What I establish out is you have to exist prepared for 10 rounds, and I was prepared tonight for this fight. If the knockout comes, then information technology comes. Just information technology didn't come tonight."
Cota'southward best punch of the nighttime might not have fifty-fifty been on Gomez. In the last minute of the third, Cota tried to sneak in a final shot in and hit referee Wes Melton in the chest by accident.
"The judges' decision was what it was, information technology's pointless to talk almost information technology at present," Cota said. "Yoelvis is a strong fighter and he hit me hard on my left rib, I think he injure me there. I'll become some Ten-rays to see what the impairment was.
"He kept up his consistency and his punching power throughout the entire fight. I was at 50% after the rib injury, simply credit to him for having fought like he did."
In the get-go fight of the night, 22-twelvemonth-onetime Luis Nunez (17-0, 12 KOs) beat 18-year-old southpaw Jonathan Fierro (13-i, 12 KOs) past x-circular unanimous conclusion in a featherweight fight.
Judges Chris Flores, Dennis O'Connell and Gonzalo Valenzuela all scored it 96-94 for Nunez.
"I experience corking, and this was some other positive step forward," Nunez said. "I kept my distance, hit him when I had to and built up my equity round by circular. What's side by side? In set for anybody. Bring them on."
The theme of the fight was elementary: Fierro tried connecting with direct lefts, and Nunez would counter him as he closed in.
Fierro had some good moments, like in the fifth and tenth rounds. But the fight was primarily Nunez backing upwards Fierro and landing some well-baked shots to the head, as he did in the seventh.
"I beat him, but there was favoritism," Fierro claimed. "The ref was conspicuously on his side, constantly interrupting the fight. I would accept knocked him out, otherwise. I want the rematch. In fact, he should be the one giving me the rematch, because the determination by the judges wasn't the right 1."
